The top-seeded Princeton women’s water polo team kicked off the CWPA Southern Division Championship with a 13-4 victory over fifth-seeded Bucknell, before handedly defeating fourth-seeded George Washington 16-2 to conclude bracket play. With the Saturday sweep, the Tigers are headed to the Southern title game for the second consecutive year.

The 12th-ranked Tigers’ extended their undefeated stance in divisional play to 7-0 with the pair of wins and improve to 22-5 on the year. Princeton now awaits the conclusion of Bracket B play to determine its opponent on Sunday at 12 noon.

Unlike their meeting a week ago with the Bison, it was the Tigers who jumped out with the offensive control and maintained it throughout the 32-minute match.

A five-goal second quarter burst guided Princeton to a 7-1 halftime advantage. As the defense limited Bucknell to three second half goals, the Tigers closed things out riding a 6-3 run to earn the opening round win.

Leading scorer Katie Rigler had a team-high four goals, scoring twice on counter attacks. Kelly Gross added three of her own, while Jessie Holechek and Molly McBee scored twice.

Ashleigh Johnson made 15 saves and limited the Bison to goals in only the second and fourth quarters. The freshman goaltender also added a pair of assists and a steal.

George Washington peppered in 18 shots on frame, but Johnson managed to deflect all but two to help the Tigers’ advance to the championship game behind their 16-2 victory.

Princeton landed 16-of-24 shots as 10 different players got in on the scoring game. Rigler and Saranna Soroka each led the way with three goals apiece, while Gross and Ashley Hatcher found the back of the net two times apiece.

The Tigers jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and corralled a 7-1 advantage by the break. GWU’s goals came in the second and third quarters and its defense was unable to slow down the Princeton offense that closed out the game outscoring them 9-1.
