In their first meeting since 2007, the fifth-ranked Princeton heavyweights posted a hard-fought win over the tenth-ranked Navy Midshipmen to retain the Navy-Princeton Cup. The showdown marked the 100th year since these two historic programs first met in the regular season.

"It's an honor to have this race back on our schedule," head coach Greg Hughes said. "Princeton and Navy first met for a dual race in 1913 and the racing has always been fierce. For generations of Princeton rowers, the Navy race was the first race of the season. It meant a lot to me when I was rowing here at Princeton and it is great to have that tradition back."

The Tiger varsity eight moved to 3-0 on the season, including last weekend's scrimmage wins over Syracuse and Georgetown, with a win in 6:08.0. Navy took second in 6:11.3.

"We stayed internal throughout the race and executed our race plan," said junior Jason Kopelman. "The Navy guys are very tough and it was great to have a chance to throw down with them."

The win was especially positive for a Princeton squad that will be moving into Ivy League competition next weekend. Princeton will head to Overpeck Lake next Saturday to take on Penn and Columbia for the Childs Cup, the oldest trophy in collegiate racing. It will be the first time in this historic series for freshman Patrick Eble, who is able to race with the varsity because of the new freshman eligibility rules.

"The start of the season has been rewarding for our boat, but I feel like these early results only indicates that our boat has a lot of aspects to work on in our race," Eble said. "There is much more speed to gain. I am very excited for our upcoming Ivy league races. As a freshman, the competition is on a completely different level and each race is a learning experience."

"Every race is exciting," Kopelman added. "We train many hours for each and every stroke of a race. The Ivy League will be very tight this year and that's great. I'm looking forward to logging some good hard miles in preparation for the races to come."

Princeton added wins in the second varsity (6:17.9) and the third varsity (6:22.3), while the Navy freshman eight earned a win over the Princeton 4V. Both teams also sent out at least one four, and Navy took it as a fifth varsity win in 7:35.0.

"Today was also a good test for the entire squad," Hughes said. "The 2V and the 3V both showed some good fight in their races. We still have lots of work to do, but I am pleased with the effort and the attitude that is developing."
