Bucknell Snaps No. 12 Menís Water Poloís Winning Streak, Beats Tigers 12-5
The No. 12 Princeton men’s water polo team saw two streaks end Sunday, its five-game win streak and perfect record in Southern Division-East Region play in the team’s 12-5 loss at Bucknell. The Tigers (13-4, 6-1 Southern) were unable to ignite their offense and suffered their first loss of the year to an unranked opponent.
Goals were traded and play was fairly even over the first half. Despite having the game and lead within range, the Tigers’ struggled to find an offensive burst. Princeton only owned the lead once at 2:29 in the second quarter off a Jamie Kuprenas goal to go up 3-2.
The Bison countered with a four-goal uncontested run that they took to the 1:37-minute mark in the third quarter.
Down 6-3, Kayj Shannon broke up Bucknell’s scoring run with his only goal of the contest, but it was not enough to broker a momentum pull for the Tigers.
Drew Hoffenberg scored Princeton’s lone goal in the fourth quarter, as Bucknell went on to outscore the Tigers 5-1 over the final eight minutes.
Hoffenberg led the Tiger offense with two goals.
Princeton will have to wait two more weeks to play for the divisional crown with its final Southern game versus George Washington scheduled for Friday, Oct. 25 at DeNunzio Pool. Before hosting the Colonials, Princeton will head to Penn to play in the Ivy League Championship on Sunday, Oct. 20.
