It took beyond the designated seven innings, but a Mike Ford grand slam in the 10th was enough to breakup a seven-inning stalemate between Princeton and Cornell to guide the Tiger baseball team to a 5-2 victory to open Sunday’s doubleheader.

Employing another late offensive burst in game two, this time a three-run rally in the sixth carried the Tigers to a 4-1 victory and a sweep of the Big Red to close out the 2013 season.

Turning Point of the Game: After Princeton tied things up in the top of the second in game one, 1-1, both sides saw a pitchers duel to force its fifth extra inning game.

In the top of the 10th, the Tigers’ first three batters reached on singles to load the bases and Mike Ford made his lone hit of the game count. Ford connected squarely on the ball and sent it over the right field fence for his second grand slam of the year to lift Princeton to a 5-1 lead.

Game two was another rubber match until the Tigers opened things up in the sixth. Princeton scored a pair of runs on bases loaded wild pitches and Alec Keller added a third with a sacrifice fly to center field to put them up 3-0. Princeton preserved its advantage behind solid pitching from starter Cameron Mingo.

Player of the Game: Along with hitting the game-winning grand slam in game one, Mike Ford put together his fifth complete game pitching performance to guide Princeton both at the plate and on the mound.

The righty concludes the year with a perfect 6-0 record, tossing a career-high 10 innings and striking out four against the Big Red. In 38 batters faced, he scattered seven hits and gave up only one earned run to lower his ERA to a league-best 0.98.

Ford tallied four hits and two walks, with his lone hit in game one coming just as the Tigers needed a momentum changer.

Pitcher of the Game: Freshman Cameron Mingo earned his first career victory, throwing seven scoreless innings in his fifth start. He tossed five strikeouts, while scattering five hits and a walk in 26 batters faced. Mingo had three 1-2-3 innings during his outing Sunday.

Batter of the Game: As he has done all year, leadoff man Alec Keller led the offense going 4-for-8 with a pair of runs, an RBI and a walk. The outfielder also did not strikeout once in his eight at-bats and hit his ninth double of the year in game two.

Closing 2013: The Tigers split the season series with Cornell, 2-2, to conclude the year 14-28, 11-9 Ivy and tied for second place in the Gehrig Division with the Big Red.
