Men's Track & Field Wins Armory Meet

NEW YORK (1/12/13) - The Princeton men's track & field team won the New York Road Runners College Night at the Armory II on Saturday night at The Armory in New York. The Tigers finished with 175.5 points ahead of 13 squads including second-place team Penn.

Junior Tom Hopkins won the long jump as the only athlete to clear seven meters, leaping to 7.32. Sophomore Stephen Soerens was third with a mark of 6.97 while junior Brad Pelisek recorded a 6.64 for fourth place. With the second-place jumper being from a club team, the Tigers would claim the top three scoring spots for 24 points.

Hopkins went on to win the 400 at 48.01, finishing in front of 28 other sprinters.

Princeton picked up big points, 33 total, in the 3000, as the Tigers went 1-2-3-4-5. Senior Michael Franklin won the event in a blistering 8:07.88. Junior Jonathan Vitez followed at 8:17.85, then junior Tyler Udland at 8:18.99, sophomore Sam Pons at 8:21.53 and junior Chris Bendtsen at 8:25.10.

Junior Omar Jarrett won the high jump with a mark of 2.04. After a third-place finish in the long jump, Soerens placed seventh in the high jump clearing 1.95.

Freshman David Pugliese won the 1000 in a time of 2:29.33, the only runner to finish under 2:30. Classmate Sam Berger was fifth at 2:32.30, as the duo picked up 14 points.

New assistant coach Robby Andrews ran 1:51.41 in a highly anticipated return in the 800. Junior Michael Williams and sophomore Bradley Paternostro finished third and fourth at 1:53.64 and 1:53.75 to claim 14 points.

Freshman Dre Nelson and sophomore Tumi Akinlawon advanced to the final of the 60. Nelson finished in third place with a time of 6.938, a one-thousandth of a second of of second place. Akinlawon sprinted to 6.96 for fifth place as the pair picked up 10 points in the event.

Three Tigers advanced to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles and earned 17 points. Senior Richard Sheldon was the runner-up at 8.21, sophomore Robert Mohr ran 8.27 for third place and freshman Gregory Caldwell ran 8.41 for sixth place.

Senior Michael Palmisano, senior Peter Callahan and freshman Brett Kelly went 5-6-7 in the mile for nine points. Palmisano was the first Tiger across at 4:17.79 followed by Callahan at 4:18.19 and Kelly at 4:18.25.

Junior Tom Scott earned the Tigers two points in the 500 as he clocked a 1:06.97 to finish seventh.

Sophomore Daniel McCord was the runner up in the 200 with a time of 22.13, while senior Sebastian Steffen was sixth at 22.70 for 11 team points.

Junior David Coneway and freshman Bryan Oslin earned points for the team in the pole vault. Coneway was third at 4.40 and Oslin reached 4.25 for seven total points.

Sophomore Scott Rushton was fourth in the shot put with a best throw of 15.27 to earn five points for the team.

The Tigers will compete at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational at Navy on Saturday, Jan. 26, taking two weeks off for finals and semester break.
