BURLINGTON, Vt. (12/29/12) - The Princeton men's hockey team played to a 2-2 draw with Merrimack in its first game back from the Christmas break, in game one of the Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup.

Junior Sean Bonar made his second start of the season and was named the Player of the Game with 34 saves.

Princeton took a 2-0 lead in the first period, but Merrimack evened it in the second period. Neither team could get the go-ahead goal as the third and overtime period were scoreless.

Junior Andrew Calof scored the opening goal at 9:11. Sophomore Tyler Maugeri dug the puck off the boards and floated it into the left circle where junior Andrew Ammon fired on frame. The shot bounced off of netminder Sam Marotta and Calof corralled the puck and buried it on the right side.

Senior Rob Kleebaum added to the lead at 19:07 when he roofed a shot from the top of the left circle. Sophomore Tom Kroshus and junior Will MacDonald received assist credits.

The tables turned in the second period. Justin Mansfield cut the Warriors deficit to one just 38 seconds in when he collected a Connor Toomey pass and put it past the blocker of Bonar. Shawn Bates tallied the game-tying goal at 4:57 with a toe drag on the doorstep. Bates nearly scored the go-ahead goal with 31.7 seconds left in the third. He got a breakaway and tried to stick handle the puck around Bonar but his shot banked off the far post and into the corner.

The Tigers wouldn't be able to get back in the game as they picked up four penalties in the third period. Princeton played a man down for more than 12 minutes in the game, but did a nice job of limited Merrimack's chances to just seven shots on seven opportunities. Princeton also had two short-handed shots on goal.

Merrimack outshot Princeton 36-20 in the game. Bonar was quick on his feet making 14 saves in the final 25 minutes, including five stops in the overtime period.

Marotta finished the game with 18 saves as his team is now 6-7-4 overall.

Princeton was 0 for 3 on the power play and 7 for 7 on the penalty kill.

The Tigers, now 3-6-4 on the season, will face host school Vermont tomorrow evening at 7 p.m., at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
