Box Score

Led by a trio of double figure scorers the Princeton women’s basketball team picked up its third straight victory in a 71-56 win at Cornell Saturday night in Ithaca, N.Y.

Blake Dietrick paced the effort with a game-high 19 points, going 7-of-10 from the field and 3-for-3 from the stripe. Over her 40-minute complete game performance she also had a game-high seven assists and added six defensive boards and two steals.

Off the bench Taylor Williams made 12 points, tying her career best, six rebounds, three assists and two steals in only 17 minutes of work.

Rounding out Princeton’s top scorers was Michelle Miller who had her first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, 11 of which coming on the defensive glass. Miller also had three steals in her 37 minutes of action.

Complacency was definitely not the name of the game for the Tigers, as Cornell worked to threaten their advantage throughout the 40-minute battle. Despite holding the lead for all but the opening three minutes of the game, the Big Red did everything they could to make things interesting and close in on Princeton’s lead.

Cornell would only trail by a couple possessions over the early run of the first, but a layin by Alex Wheatley at 6:01 provided the Tigers with their first 10-point advantage, 26-16. From there Princeton expanded its lead to as high as 15 and eventually went into halftime up 38-26.

The Big Red continued to pressure the Tigers throughout the second half and closed in to make it a seven-point game, 44-37 at 16:16.

Cornell would stay within 10 points until Princeton picked things up and went on a critical 6-0 run to reestablish its 15-point lead, 60-45 at 9:29.

With momentum secured, Cornell could never close in further on Princeton’s lead than 13 points.

Princeton led the Big Red 43-29 in rebounding, headlined by senior Kristen Helmstetter’s team-high eight. The forward also had eight points and four assists in the contest.

Princeton shot over 50 percent for the third straight game, going 29-for-56 from the field (51.8 percent), and held Cornell to 33.9 percent (20-for-59).

Following their weekend sweep on the road, the Tigers will now return home for a Friday meeting with Brown and Saturday contest versus Yale.

Postgame Notes: Princeton has now won the last 11 meetings versus Cornell and owns the all-time series record, 43-16 … Michelle Miller tallied her first career double-double and is Princeton’s fourth player to reach the feat this season.
