CANTON, N.Y. (2/16/13) - The Princeton women's hockey team couldn't sustain a two-goal lead over St. Lawrence as the Tigers dropped a 4-2 game at Appleton Arena on Saturday, Feb. 16.

The Tigers score twice within three minutes in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. St. Lawrence got on the board before the period ended and used a power-play goal to tie the game in the second. A power-play goal with just 3:42 gave the Saints the go-ahead goal and an empty-net in the final minute put the game away.

Princeton is now 5-13-2 in the ECAC and remains in eighth place in the league standings. It's a must-win situation for the Tigers next weekend. If the Tigers win both games, at Brown and Yale, they will clinch a playoff bid. If they tie or lose one or both games they will be out.

Sophomore defender Ali Pankowski scored her second goal of the season on a delayed penalty to put the Tigers on the board at with 2:31 remaining in the open frame. Pankowski picked up a pass from junior Sally Butler and rocketed a shot from the blue line that beat netminder Carmen MacDonald. Butler made it 2-0 at 17:29 when she buried a rebound by sophomore Brianne Mahoney. Junior captain Denna Laing was credited with the secondary assist.

Jenna Marks cut Princeton's lead to one with a goal with 1:18 left in the first. Marks redirected a shot by Dayle Wilkinson to put the Saints on the board.

Kayla Raniwsky capitalized on the Saints' second power-play oppportunity at 14:35 of the second. She scored on a scrum out in front with Abbey McRaw and Wilkinson earning the assists.

Princeton played down a skater for eight minutes in the third period after getting called for four penalties. Kelly Sabatine converted on the fourth penalty for the go-ahead goal at 16:38. Brooke Fernandez hit Amanda Boulier with a pass and sent a pass across the ice to Sabatine who beat goalie Kimberly Newell for the goal.

The Tigers called a timeout at 18:35 and then pulled Newell 11 seconds later for the extra attacker. The Saints intercepted the puck and sent down the ice. Mel Desrochers redirected it for the empty-net goal with 45 seconds remaining.

Newell finished the game with 39 saves as St. Lawrence outshot Princeton 43-28. MacDonald ended with 26 saves including three breakaway chances by the Tigers in the third period.

St. Lawrence was 2 for 6 on the power play while Princeton went 0 for 2.

St. Lawrence improves to 17-11-4 overall and 12-5-3 in league play. Princeton is now 10-15-2 on the season.
