One year ago, Princeton and Harvard battled down to the ninth match before the Tigers took control of the Ivy League race. After taking care of business in Saturday's Ivy League opener against Dartmouth, the Tigers will look to seize control of the race once again when they take on Harvard Sunday at 2:30.
Princeton moved to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Ivy League with an 8-1 victory over the Big Green Saturday afternoon in the league opener for both teams. Playing in a two-shift format, Princeton took over with a 4-0 sweep in the opening matches and quickly finished off the Big Green in the second shift.
While the team score was decisive, there were several tense moments, especially in the opening shift. The top match came on the main court, where Dartmouth's Robert Maycock pulled out 11-8 and 13-11 wins over Samuel Kang to open a 2-0 lead. Kang, whose indefatigable style helped him earn All-America honors last season, was too strong over the last three sets and pulled out wins of 11-2, 11-3 and 11-3.
Sophomores Taylor Tutrone (No. 6) and David Hoffman (No. 8) were both pushed to four games in their wins, while junior Dylan Ward, who provided that final win for Princeton over Harvard last season, took out Christopher Jung in three games.
Freshmen Michael LeBlanc and Vivek Dinodia both took 3-0 wins in their Ivy League debuts, while senior Todd Harrity won three tough games to defeat Christopher Hanson at No. 1. Tyler Osborne won at No. 3, while senior Steve Harrington was forced to retire late in a marathon match at No. 5.
Both Princeton and Harvard will be 1-0 in Ivy play when Sunday's match begins at approximately 2:30 (it will follow the Princeton-Harvard women's match). The highlight match will come at No. 1, where Harrity, the 2011 national champion, will take on reigning national champion Ali Farag of Harvard. Farag won a tight five-game match over Harrity last season.
All three courts will be streamed live on GoPrincetonTigers.TV.
