BOX SCORE

Jeff Singer scattered two hits over six innings to lead the Monmouth Hawks to a 3-0 victory over Princeton Thursday afternoon on Clarke Field.

Princeton (9-15) received a strong pitching performance as well, but the middle inning would be the Tigers’ downfall.

Junior starter Nick Donatiello was cruising through his first four innings, but he hit trouble in the fifth. A one-out walk and an error on a pickoff attempt sent Jon Guida to third base, and he scored on a sacrifice fly to leftfielder Grant Lamberton. Another miscue, this time a passed ball, put Steve Wilgus in scoring position, and he scored on a base hit to centerfield.

Princeton’s opportunities were few and far between, although an error and a hit-by-pitch in the opening inning did give the Tigers an early shot to take the lead. Monmouth got out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout, and that would be the story of the game for the Princeton offense.

Senior Alec Keller recorded Princeton’s first hit of the game in the fourth inning when he got just enough of the ball to put it between the catcher and pitcher. Monmouth got the next three, and then the Hawks stranded Zack Belski, who had two of Princeton's four hits, in the bottom of the fifth after the freshman launched a double to left field.

Princeton did get a trio of base hits in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Monmouth induced a 6-4-3 double play to help clinch its eighth win of the season.

Princeton will move back into Ivy League for its next 10 games, starting with four this weekend at Columbia. After those games, the Tigers will host six straight, starting with the rescheduled Harvard doubleheader next Wednesday at 1 pm.
