The fourth-ranked Princeton women's lightweight rowing team opened up the 2014 season against the four-time defending national champion, and it posted a strong showing during the final day of the San Diego Crew Classic.

Princeton placed second in the Womens Collegiate Lightweight grand final Sunday afternoon in a time of 7:08.59. Top-ranked Stanford won the race in 7:03.10 to win a two-team duel for first. Both teams were well ahead of third-place Tulsa, which finished in 7:32.40.

The five teams also raced in a prelim heat Saturday, with Stanford-Princeton-Tulsa finishing 1-2-3 in that race as well. The Tigers actually cut nearly five seconds off their deficit from Saturday's heat to Sunday's final.

"Normally we go into this race with seven or eight weeks of water-time under our belt," head coach Paul Rassam said. "This year we had three weeks. I thought our Sunday performance was strong.  It was definitely something to build on."

Princeton will have significantly less travel for its remaining contests; in fact, though it will race on three different courses, the Tigers won't have to cross the state line once. Princeton will race next Saturday for the Knecht Cup on Lake Mercer, and then will compete April 19 (Georgetown) and April 26 (Harvard) on Lake Carnegie.
