Please note new race times for Saturday's regatta with Virginia and Columbia; as opposed to previously announced 10:40 start time, the first race will now begin at 9 am.

There has been nothing easy about the start of the women’s open rowing season.

Mother Nature played her part, sending Lake Carnegie into a deep freeze into March and limiting the water time for the reigning Ivy League champion Princeton Tigers. They opened last weekend with perennial NCAA qualifier Brown, who won three of five races and reclaimed the Class of 1975 Trophy.

This weekend, Princeton takes on a Top 3 opponent and recent national champion, as well as another league foe looking to break into the national ranks.

Of course, getting through this stage could help an inexperienced Princeton squad be ready for the postseason challenges down the road.

“Due to the unpredictability of the weather, we started training on the water a little late,” sophomore Meghan Wheeler said. “Therefore, as a team we have been working hard to take advantage of all the water time we can get. Our improvements all depend on the number of strokes we can get in before our next race, but more importantly, our development on the water throughout the entire season will really show what type of team we are.”

Wheeler was part of the varsity eight that fell by three seconds last Saturday to Brown in a regatta that also included a win over Michigan State.

“It’s always good to get the first race jitters out and Brown was a good competitor who raced a confident and aggressive race,” she said. “Every type of race experience helps us learn something new about our boat and how we can work together to improve it. I'm really looking forward to the rest of this season and growing as a boat and a team.”

That growth will continue Saturday morning during the only home competition on Lake Carnegie. The three-team regatta begins with a Varsity C4+ competition at 10:40, and will continue with races every 20 minutes until the varsity eight begins at 12:20 pm.

Virginia, ranked third in this week's USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll, opened its spring in impressive fashion last weekend with a victory over sixth-ranked USC. Columbia, which was just outside the Top 20, fell in its Ivy League opener against both No. 7 Yale and unranked Penn.

“Being able to race teams outside the Ivy League, especially a team like UVA, is an invaluable experience,” Wheeler said. “UVA and Columbia are both great teams, and we look forward to some competitive and strong racing all around. Races in the early season can hold some weight, but teams improve throughout the season and many things can change come championship season. Regardless, this weekend will be a great match up.”
