PISCATAWAY, N.J. (9/13/13) – Sophomore Thomas Sanner and junior Cameron Porter both converted penalty kick attempts but it wasn’t enough as the Princeton men’s soccer team fell 3-2 to Rutgers on Friday, Sept. 13 at Yurcak Field.

For the second straight game Princeton (1-1) delivered a great second half, outshooting Rutgers (2-2-1) 9-3 and held a 4-0 corner kick differential as it scored the only goal of the half. However the Tigers couldn’t overcome their two-goal deficit.

Sanner didn’t waste any time getting acclimated to the 2013 season. In his first game of the season he scored in the seventh minute after drawing a penalty kick.

Sanner burst by his two defenders and sprinted to the goal where he was tackled by goalkeeper David Greczek. The referee called for a yellow card and signaled a penalty kick. Sanner settled up and toed the ball into the lower left corner to give Princeton the 1-0 lead.

Rutgers scored three unanswered in the first half to take a 3-1 lead.

Rutgers scored on its own penalty kick in the 17th minute to knot the game at 1-1. Correa deked a Princeton defender as he got the ball of a corner kick but was then tripped up by another defender who was called for the penalty. Mael Corboz took the shot and fired to the right of goalkeeper Seth MacMillan.

Corboz tallied his second of the night 11 minutes later when he nailed a shot from the top of the box.

Todd Webb made it 3-1 as he ran down the left flank and hit the right lower corner.

Porter scored his first goal of the season when he converted a penalty kick attempt in the 81st minute.

It was a tough chore for the Tigers’ defense in the first half but they showed some spectacular play.

Senior Billy McGuinness kept pace with Kene Eze and stripped him of the ball just inside the 18 as he was making a run to the goal in the 19th minute. Junior Joe Saitta had a nice play as he took the ball from Correa at the tip of the 6-yard box in the 37th and junior Andrew Mills had a great block on a shot from the top of the box in the 44th.

One of the biggest plays came from senior Chris Benedict in the 71st minute when he was credited with a team save. Benedict headed a ball out of danger on a shot by Thomas O’Rourke as MacMillan was trying to cut off a corner on the left side.

MacMillian made two saves in goal for Princeton while Greczek stopped five on the other end. Shots fell in favor of Princeton 13-11, while corner kicks were even at 5-5.

Princeton hosts Seton Hall in the home opener on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 2 p.m., on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
