Session One Recap l Session Two Recap

Junior Ryan Callahan fell one point short of his first trip to the NCAA Championships during the consolation semifinal round of the 2013 EIWA Championships. The unseeded Callahan, who defeated two seeds along his weekend journey, fell 4-3 to fifth-seeded Ian Korb.

Korb, who defeated Callahan 10-4 during the regular season, scored first with an early takedown, though Callahan earned an escape and trailed 2-1 entering the second. He chose the defensive position and scored a reversal to lead 3-2, though Korb picked up an escape of his own to even the score at 3-3.

Callahan attempted to ride Korb through the third and earn a winning point for riding time, but Korb escaped in the final 30 seconds to take a 4-3 lead. He fought off Callahan's final attempts and ultimately finished third at the weight class.

Callahan placed sixth after falling to Army's Coleman Gracey, but he capped his best stretch at Princeton with this championship weekend. After winning seven of his final 10 regular-season matches, Callahan took out both the third and seventh seeds during his run to the EIWA podium.

"He went out and wrestled hard all weekend," head coach Chris Ayres said. "I'm disappointed for him that he didn't get the NCAA berth, but I'm proud of the way he competed."

Senior Zach Bintliff became the 27th wrestler in Princeton history to place at the EIWA Championships in three different years. While his quest for the NCAAs ended during Friday's second session, Bintliff still returned to the Eastern podium for the third straight season with an eighth-place finish at 149.

"Zach is a great example for our room of what happens when you work hard and do the right things," Ayres said. "Less than 30 guys who wore these colors have placed at three Eastern championships, and Zach is one of them. His leadership this season for a young team will pay dividends for years to come."

Freshman Scott Gibbons ended his terrific first season with a seventh-place finish at 184. His final match of the season came Saturday morning, as he defeated Bucknell's Robert Marchese 5-3 for seventh place. The victory is the team-best 23rd of the season for Gibbons, who led a freshman class that produced five Eastern starters this season.

"Gibbons was our most consistent wrestler this season," Ayres said. "Both he and the rest of his classmates have now gotten a taste of both this tournament and the college wrestling season. I'm excited to see what Gibbons, and the rest of this class, can do next season."
