Men's Track & Field Wins 22nd Consecutive HYP Meet

PRINCETON, N.J. (2/9/13) - The Princeton men's track & field team extended it's HYP win streak to 22 straight as the Tigers defeated Harvard and Yale at Jadwin Gym on Saturday, Feb. 9.

The Tigers scored 88 points, while Harvard was second with 59, followed by Yale with 23.

Through the first seven events Harvard was in the lead. After the triple jump, high jump and 3,000 were scored Princeton took the lead and would hold it through the next six events.

Princeton claimed nine out of a possible 11 points in both the triple and high jumps. Junior Damon McLean won the triple jump with a PR of 15.57, recorded on his second attempt. Sophomore Nana Owusu-Nyanteky was the runner-up with a PR of 15.50 and freshman Jake Scinto fourth at 13.74. Junior Omar Jarrett was the winner in the high jump, clearing 2.04. Sophomore Stephen Soerens finished in second with a jump of 1.99 and senior Richard Sheldon was fourth at 1.94.

Princeton went 1-2 in the 3,0000. Junior Jonathan Vitez ran a PR of 8:10.01 to win the event while sophomore Sam Pons posted a time of 8:12.16.

Junior Tom Hopkins won the long jump and 400. In the long jump, Hopkins reached 7.25 on his second attempt and had another jump of 7.20 to surpass the best jump by the second-place finisher from Harvard. McLean was third at 7.17 to give Princeton seven points in the event. Hopkins then claimed the win on the track, as the only sprinter to run the 400 in under 50 seconds at 48.95.

Princeton got eight out of a possible 11 in the 1,000. Junior Michael Williams ran 2:28.83 for the win. Senior Nathan Mathabane and freshman Jamie Fehrnstrom were third and fourth at 2:31.73 and 2:33.94, respectively.

The Tigers went 1-2-4 in the 60-meter hurdles. Freshman Gregory Caldwell clocked 8.10 for the win, while Sheldon hit 8.17 for second place and sophomore Rob Mohr was fourth at 8.24. Mohr had a PR in the prelims at 7.91. In the 60, freshman Dre Nelson picked up the win sprinting to 6.84 while classmate John Hill was third at 6.88.

The Tigers claimed first and third in both the 500 and 800. Sophomore Bradley Paternostro won the 500 at 1:05.90 with junior Tom Scott third at 1:06.85. Senior Russell Dinkins placed first in the 800 at 1:53.42 with freshman Brian Poirier third at 1:56.59.

Eight points came from the 200 where sophomore Daniel McCord claimed the win at 22.13. Senior Sebastian Steffen was second at 22.82.

Other point scorers included Scott Rushton in the shot put and Bryan Oslin and David Coneway in the pole vault.

Princeton capped the meet by winning the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. McCord, Scott, Hopkins and freshman Travis McHugh beat out Harvard by five seconds at 3:18.89. The 4x8 of senior Michael Palmisano, freshman David Pugliese, Mathabane and Dinkins beat Yale in a dual by more than 22 seconds.

Princeton hosts the Princeton Invitational next Saturday, Feb. 16, in the final meet before Heps.
