Though Princeton led for more than 33 minutes, 12th-ranked Marquette ended the Tiger women's soccer team's NCAA tournament run Thursday afternoon in Provo, Utah, with a 3-1 second-round win.

Princeton (14-4-1) became the second-fastest team to score on Marquette (18-2-2) this year after North Carolina two months ago, but for the first time in three tries, Marquette rallied to win. Only Princeton, North Carolina and Duke held leads over Marquette this season, Duke most recently on Sept. 9, 15 games ago.

Lauren Lazo had Princeton's goal in the 11th minute, dribbling along the end line and firing it in to put Princeton ahead for the second time in as many NCAA tournament games this season.

Princeton was within 46 seconds of taking a 1-0 lead into the halftime room for the second time this postseason, but Marquette's Mady Vicker tied it with a chip-in after the Tigers couldn't clear.

Marquette's go-ahead goal by Taylor Madigan came off a corner kick just more than eight minutes into the second half, and the put-away goal by Ally Miller came with less than eight minutes to play off another corner that stayed in the box.

Postgame notes

• The appearance was Princeton's 10th in the NCAA tournament and eighth in the last 14 seasons.

• Though the program had won NCAA tournament games in 1982, 2001 and 2004, last weekend's win over West Virginia on the Mountaineers' home field was the first to come away from the Princeton campus.

• Senior Jen Hoy finished her season with 18 goals, the second-highest season total in program history, and her career with 36 goals, the fourth-highest total in program history.

• Hoy and sophomore Lauren Lazo, with 29 goals combined, were only the third duo in Princeton history to each score 10-plus goals in a season, after Linda DeBoer and Susan Mooney in 1982 (22 combined) and current assistant coach Esmeralda Negron and Emily Behncke in 2004 (33 combined).

• Princeton's record all-time against Big East teams moved to 36-23-4 overall and 2-5 in the NCAA tournament.

• Princeton was looking to defeat the 2012 Big East tournament champion (Marquette) after defeating the 2011 champion (West Virginia, now in the Big 12) in the first round.

• The loss ended Princeton's 12-match win streak, tied for the second longest in program history.

• Princeton ended a Marquette shutout streak that had reached 287:40.
