PRINCETON -- A doubleheader-long dominant performance from Penn pitcher Alexis Borden yielded the Princeton softball team only two runs over the two games Sunday and delivered both games for the Quakers.

Penn (23-14, 8-4) moved to within two games of Cornell in the Ivy League South divisional standings after the Big Red split with Columbia Sunday. The Tigers (12-23, 6-6) fell four games back of Cornell with eight to play over the next two weekends.

Game 1: Penn 4, Princeton 1

Princeton's only run came in the first inning as Penn quickly responded and kept the Tigers off the board in a 4-1 win to open Sunday's play.

Maddie Cousens drove home Nicole Ontiveros in the first frame to put the Tigers up 1-0, but the lead was short lived. The Quakers tied it on two hits and an error in the second and went ahead 3-1 on three singles, a walk and an error in the second.

That was more than enough for Penn pitcher Alexis Borden (14-4), who gave up as many hits in the first inning of Sunday's opener -- three -- as she did the rest of the game. Penn added a run in the top of the seventh on two hits and an error. Cousens went 2 for 2 with a walk in Sunday's first game, while Alex Peyton (5-9) took the loss for Princeton in the circle.

Game 2: Penn 5, Princeton 1

Princeton again struck in the first inning of game two, but only after Penn put up three runs of its own in the top half of the frame on the way to a 5-1 win.

Two singles and a Jessica Melendez three-run home run staked the Quakers to a 3-0 lead against Princeton pitcher Liza Kuhn (5-10) before Princeton got one back in the bottom half of the inning on an Alex Peyton RBI-single that brought home Nicole Ontiveros.

From the final two batters of the first inning through the end of the sixth, Alexis Borden (15-5) let only one Princeton batter reach, and that was on a third-strike wild pitch. Sarah McGowan led off the bottom of the seventh for the Tigers with a double, but she advanced no further as Borden closed out the win.

The Tigers will head to Columbia when they continue Ivy League play next weekend but will first head to Lehigh for a non-league twinbill Wednesday.
