Former Princeton men's soccer standout Darren Spicer '06 has found a home with the Minnesota Thunder of the USL first division, and he scored a goal for the Thunder in a 3-2 win over the El Paso Indios in U.S. Open Cup competition Tuesday.
Spicer, the 2004 Ivy League Player of the Year for Princeton, gave the Thunder a 2-1 lead in the 40th minute of the game against El Paso, hitting a low ball into the right corner of the net.
The Diamond Bar, Calif., native joined the Thunder at the end of May. The team plays in the 12-team United Soccer League First Division.
Before coming back to the United States, Spicer played in Germany for Brinkum S.V.
of the Overliga. While there, he racked up four goals and eight assists in his short
stint.
Spicer was drafted by the MLS's Chivas USA with their first pick
in the 2006 MLS supplemental draft. The 5-11, 165-lb., forward scored 27 goals in his Princeton career, including 12 in 2004. He was twice a first-team All-Ivy League pick and finished his career 12th all-time at Princeton with 58 points.
