PRINCETON, N.J. (9/3/14) - The Princeton men's soccer team begins the 2014 season on Friday, Sept. 5 when it travels to north Jersey to play Fairleigh Dickinson. Game time is at 8 p.m., at University Stadium.

This is the second consecutive season that the Tigers open with the Knights. Princeton owns a 15-7-1 edge in the all-time series with FDU. However it was FDU that took last year's game, 3-0, ending Princeton's run of four straight season-opening victories.

FDU is 0-2 on the season after dropping two games at the VCU Invitational, losing 3-0 to the host and 2-1 to William & Mary. The Knights are coming off of a 9-8-1 season and a fifth-place finish in the Northeast Conference. Senior Nico Wright, who was the leading scorer in 2013, has scored the team's lone goal this year. Last year he strung together three goals and five assists for 11 points. The team two key scorers from a year ago in Anders Vest-Hansen and Simon Doherty, who combined for 15 points. Also gone is the NEC Defender of the Year Nicholas Walker and starting keeper Jacob Lissek. The Knights have tried both Matthew Weigner and Aleksandar Djekic in goal this season with each playing 90 minutes. Weigner has the better numbers with a .667 save percentage and a 2.00 goals against average, and Djekic owns a .250 save percentage and a 3.00 GAA.

Princeton returns seven of its 11 starters from last season when it posted an 7-9-1 record and brings in six newcomers. The Tigers aren't left with any holes on the offensive end with scoring tandem Thomas Sanner and Cameron Porter returning. Porter was the leading scorer in the Ivy League last year with 21 points, while Sanner was fourth in the league and second on the team in points with eight. Brendan McSherry and Nico Hurtado backed up with eight and six points, respectively. First-team all-Ivy selection Myles McGinley will centralize the midfield as one of three team captains. Defensively the team needs to replace Billy McGuinness, Chris Benedict, Patrick O'Neil and goalie Seth MacMillan. A key defensive player returning is first-team All-Ivy selection Josh Miller, who is a tri-captain along with Andrew Mills, another starting defender from last year. To hear more about this year’s team, watch the season preview video interview with head coach Jim Barlow.
