12 Members of Men's Track & Field Qualify for NCAA East Regionals

PRINCETON, N.J. (5/21/14) - Twelve members of the Princeton men's track & field team will participate in the 2014 NCAA East Regional it was announced by the NCAA on Thursday, May 22. The East Regional will be held in Jacksonville, Fla., on the campus of the University of North Florida on May 29-31.

Senior Tom Hopkins completes a career sweep of NCAA Regional appearances in the 400. He clocked a 46.69 at the Princeton Quad meet to qualify and owns a PR of 46.23. The first round of the 400 is slated for 7:20 p.m., on Thursday. The top three from each of six heats plus the next six fastest times will advance to the quarterfinal round on Friday at 6 p.m.

Hopkins will pick up double duty as he also qualified in the long jump. His jump of 7.71 from Heps is the 10th best mark in the East. This is the first time he will compete in the long jump at Regionals. The event is Thursday at 2 p.m., with the top 12 moving on to the finals in Oregon.

Both freshman William Paulson and senior Michael Williams qualified for the 1500. Paulson ran a PR of 3:44.15 at the Larry Ellis meet, while Williams posted a 3:49.82 from the Elite Meet. The first round of the 1500 is Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The top five from each of four heats plus the next four fastest times advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Williams is making this third appearance in the Regionals, but first in the 1500. He competed in the 800 the last two years. Williams has championship experience, winning the national title in the indoor distance medley relay in 2013.

Junior Eddie Owens is making a return to the steeplechase after missing last season. He qualified with an 8:52.78 run at IC4As last weekend. The quarterfinal round is set for 8:50 p.m., on Friday. The top three from each of three heats plus the next three fastest times advance to the championship in Eugene.

Three Tigers qualified for the 10k, with seniors Chris Bendtsen and Tyler Udland putting up the top two times in the East at 28:49.08 and 28:57.25. Both times broke the Princeton record this season. Joining them is senior Alejandro Arroyo Yamin who ran 29:19.08. All three competed in the event last year, with Bendtsen advancing to Eugene. The semifinal is on Thursday at 9 p.m., with the top 12 moving on the championship.

Bendtsen also qualified in the 5k with a time of 14:01.28 from the Larry Ellis Invitational. He has run under a 14-minute 5k with a PR of 13:57.46 from Mt. Sac in 2013. Like Hopkins, Bendtsen has qualified all four years in the 5k, and now twice in the 10k.

Sophomore Adam Bragg makes his NCAA debut in the pole vault. He cleared 5.15 at the Elite Meet to qualify. This past indoor season he reached a PR of 5.25. The event will begin at noon on Saturday with the top 12 advancing to the final in Eugene.

Senior Damon McLean and junior Nana Owusu-Nyantekyi both qualified in the triple jump for the second consecutive season. McLean jumped a PR and school record 16.11, which ranks him sixth in the East. He is a two-time All-America in the event, his best finish being eighth in Des Moines in 2012. He finishing 14th indoors in 2013. This is his third Regional appearance. Owusu-Nyantekyi jumped 15.31 to qualify for the second time in his career. He can jump further, with a PR of 15.50. The triple jump starts at 5 p.m., on Friday with the top 12 advancing to the championship in Eugene.

Another duo making the Regionals are shot putters freshman Christopher Cook and junior Scott Rushton. Cook threw a PR of 17.67 at Heps and Rushton launched to 17.64 a week before at the Elite Meet. Rushton has thrown further, with a PR of 17.69 from the 2013 Heps. This is the first NCAA appearance for both. The shot put is slated for 4 p.m., on Thursday with the top 12 moving on to championship weekend.
