No. 8 Women’s Water Polo Opens Road Swing at Bison Invite

The eighth-ranked Princeton women’s water polo team will open its eight-game road swing at the Bison Invitational this weekend from Feb. 15-16 hosted at Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa. The Tigers (3-0) are slated to play four games, including a pair of ranked opponents.

Bison Invitational Schedule • Tournament Central
Saturday, Feb. 15 vs. Marist • 2:15 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 15 vs. No. 13 UC San Diego • 6 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 16 vs. Bucknell • 10:30 a.m. • Video Stream
Sunday, Feb. 16 vs. No. 20 Michigan • 2:15 p.m.

Last Time Out:
• The Tigers opened the year on a winning note, sweeping the Princeton Invitational 3-0.
• Princeton kicked off play with a 9-4 win over Wagner and an 11-4 victory versus Iona on Feb. 8, followed by topping VMI 17-4 the next day.
• The Tigers outscored their opponents 37-12 over the two-day invite.

On Deck:
• Princeton will head next to the MAAC/CWPA Crossover hosted at Harvard from Feb. 22-23.
• Two familiar foes already in Iona and No. 20 Wagner, along with Siena and Villanova are on deck for the Tigers.

Johnson Named Defensive Player of the Week:
• Another season opener for goalie Ashleigh Johnson, another record broken.
• The sophomore surpassed her previous record of 19 with a Princeton single-game saves record of 20 versus Wagner to earn CWPA Southern Division Player of the Week honors.
• She tallied 44 saves and two steals over 10 quarter of work to go 3-0 in the cage.

Welcome to the Lineup:
• Princeton’s trio of freshmen all made their Tiger debuts this weekend, contributing in all three games.
Hannah Lapkin had a team-high four goals versus VMI and a steal against Wagner.
Morgan Hallock’s amassed a team-best three assists versus VMI to bring her weekend total to four.
Sydney Saxe had two goals, two steals and an assist over her three-game outing.

Leaders of the Pack: Seniors Molly McBee and Katie Rigler will serve as co-captains in 2014.

Live on ESPNU: The national stage awaits the Tigers, as Princeton’s contest versus Harvard on Sunday, Mar. 2 at 11 a.m. at DeNunzio Pool will be aired live on ESPNU.

Road Warriors:

• With the friendly confines of DeNunzio Pool not often on the schedule, the Tigers will become road warriors this season.

• 24 of 30 regular season games and the Southern Division and CWPA championships will all be played on the road.

• Princeton’s trips will span the Northeast and take them to Southern California for an eight-game trip.

Princeton Polling:
• The Tigers return to the No. 8 ranking with 62 points, holding onto the top position in the national top-20 among East Coast programs.
• Princeton also maintains its stance as the top-ranked team in the CWPA Top 10 Poll with 99 points.

Scouting Marist:
• Well into its season, Marist enters Saturday’s meeting riding a 3-5 record.
• The Red Foxes are most recently coming off a 1-3 weekend at the UCSD-hosted Triton Invite in California, earning their lone win over Cal State East Bay, 14-6.
• The Tigers are a perfect 9-0 in the all-time series versus Marist, including a 5-0 record in neutral sited contests.
• In the last meeting, Princeton earned a 13-6 win on Feb. 16, 2013 at the Bison Invite.

Scouting No. 13 UC San Diego:
• Coming off a 2-2 weekend at its own Triton Invite, No. 13 UC San Diego sits at 6-2.
• The Tritons are 4-0 in neutral sited matches and 3-2 versus ranked teams.
• Courtney Miller leads the team in the cage with 62 saves, while Sarah Lizotte’s 22 goals headline the offensive attack.
• Princeton owns the all-time series versus UCSD, 9-3, most recently earning a thrilling overtime win, 12-10, in the fifth-place game of the 2013 NCAA Championships on May 12.

Scouting Bucknell:
• Bucknell officially opens its year with the Bison Invite, playing five games between Friday and Sunday.
• The Bison are coming off an 8-19, 2-3 Southern 2013 season.
• Princeton owns the all-time series versus Bucknell, 36-7, sweeping the 2013 meetings, 14-5, and 13-4.

Scouting No. 20 Michigan:
• In a three-way tie for No. 20 in the nation, Michigan enters the tournament with a 1-6 record.
• The Wolverines opened the year with a 15-6 win over Iona, before dropping its last six straight all to teams ranked or currently ranked in the national polls.
• UM is led by Kelsey Nolan’s 12 goals and two assists in the field. Goalie Emily Browning (1-4) has a 10.52 goals against average and .388 saves percentage.
• Michigan owns the all-time series versus Princeton, 15-7, but in the last meeting the Tigers were able to top the Wolverines, 7-5, in the 2013 CWPA Eastern Championship title game in Ann Arbor, Mich. to earn their second consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament.
