Princeton (8-2, 8-2 EIWA, 2-1 Ivy League) has won five of its six matches since the start of 2014, including a trio of road wins last weekend. While two of those were close victories over Ivy opponents, none matched the drama of Saturday's 23-20 comeback win over Boston University. Trailing 23-20 with four matches remaining, Princeton got major decisions from senior Ryan Callahan and freshman Troy Murtha to get withing striking distance.
Freshman Brett Harner, who leads all members of the Class of 2017 with 22 wins this season, moved up to 197 and recorded a fall with 32 seconds remaining to move the Tigers to within three points of the Terriers. Sophomore Abram Ayala finished the job, pinning Kevin Innis with 48 seconds left at heavyweight to seal the team win.
That win assured Princeton's its first winning season since 2000-01, and now it will shoot for its first winning season in the Ivy League since 2010. That season included a 28-13 win at Columbia, marking the only Tiger victory over the Lions in the last 12 meetings. Last season, Columbia won the first seven matches of the dual en route to a 30-7 victory.
Two of Princeton's starters can reach the 20-win mark this weekend, including Ayala, who enters Friday having won 10 of his last 12 matches. Freshman Jordan Laster has 19 wins at 141 pounds, though he will face a tough challenge in Columbia's Matt Bystol, an NCAA Championships qualifier last season.
While Harner and Laster have led the Princeton freshman class, Columbia's Markus Scheidel (157) has been a top newcomer in the Ivy League as well. He leads the Lions with 21 victories this season, while both Josh Houldsworth (18-9) and Zack Hernandez (184) have 18 wins.
On Sunday, Princeton will take on Sacred Heart, led by former Tiger assistant coach Andy Lauiser.
