The No. 11 Princeton men’s water polo team split results to open its Southern California road swing. The Tigers defeated Chapman, 13-10, before suffering their first loss of the year, 11-7, to No. 7 Long Beach State.

Drew Hoffenberg and Kayj Shannon led the offense with five and four goals, respectively over both contests.

In the road swing opener at Chapman, the Panthers opened with a slight advantage 2-1 after the first quarter, but the Tigers tied things up 4-4 by halftime. The Panther’s hopes of an upset were extinguished in the second half, as Princeton went on to outscore Chapman 9-6 over the final two quarters.

Sam Butler had three steals and a pair of goals, while Kurt Buchbinder added three steals, an assist and a goal. In goal, Ben Dearborn tallied nine saves.

In the later game versus seventh-ranked CSULB, Shannon put Princeton up 1-0 at 5:59 in the first quarter, but the lead would be short lived. The 49ers responded to hold a 3-2 lead by the second.

The second quarter proved to be a defensive battle, going in favor of the home side. The Beach connected with 27 seconds left in the period to create a two-goal lead, 4-2, at halftime.

Following a Hoffenberg goal, Butler tied things up, 4-4, with 3:04 left in the third quarter. Princeton was unable to corral its momentum after knotting the score and Long Beach State went on to score four unanswered goals. That offensive run proved to be the decision maker, as the Tigers were unable to create a final substantial offensive push.

Goalie Alex Gow had seven saves in the effort.

Princeton (7-1, 3-0 Southern) now preps to tackle No. 2 USC at 1 p.m. ET, La Verne at 6 p.m. ET and No. 1 UCLA at 11 p.m. ET on Saturday.
