Princeton field hockey midfielder Teresa Benvenuti ’16 and the U.S. U21 National Team concluded play at the Junior World Cup in Mönchengladbach, Germany with a seventh-place finish.

After going 2-1 in pool play and suffering a defeat in the quarterfinals to Argentina, Team USA battled Australia on Aug. 2 in the consolation bracket. After going down 2-0, the Americans’ responded to cut the deficit in half. Their efforts went unrewarded, as Australia won 4-1.

In the seventh place match, a battle tested U.S. side answered with a 4-2 win versus South Africa to conclude the tournament.

“It’s fantastic to close (with) a win and we had a great tournament overall,” said U.S. head coach Steve Jennings. “We played some incredible matches. Our losses were to some of the greatest teams in the world and for many of those games we were right there for long periods of time. (I) really couldn’t be prouder of this team.”

The U.S. took the initial advantage, before South Africa squared things up in the 29th minute. Team USA countered with three uncontested goals through the 68th minute of play. South Africa managed to squeak one by an otherwise tight U.S. defense in the 69th minute to close out the match’s scoring efforts.

The 2012 Ivy League Rookie of the Year Benvenuti had an assist at the 16-team tournament.
