Princeton right-handed pitcher Zak Hermans ’13 was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 30th round Saturday in the Major League Baseball First-Year Draft. The two-time All-Ivy selection and 2012 Ivy Pitcher of the Year was the 888th pick.

Hermans signed with the club on Sunday and will report to the Cubs' facility in Mesa, Ariz., before being assigned to one of two teams, either the Cubs' Rookie Ball team in Mesa, or its Class A Short Season team in Boise.

In 2013, Hermans went 3-4 with a 2.40 ERA. Over nine starts spanning 56.1 innings, he amassed 55 strikeouts, 12 walks and opponents hit .214 against. Over his four-year starting career, he went 18-11 with a 3.77 ERA in 38 appearances. He tallied 195 strikeouts, 79 walks and opponents hit .256 against him.

Hermans is the first Tiger to be drafted by the Cubs and 44th draftee in the MLB amateur entry draft since 1965.
