The NCAA field hockey championship has helped Princeton to the top spot in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings.

It's too bad that the academic year isn't over. The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings look pretty good right now, at least if you're a Princeton fan.

Princeton is ranked No. 1 in Division I in the first standings for the 2012-13 season with 195 points. Stanford, who has won 18 consecutive Directors' Cups, is second with 168.5 points.

Princeton's previous highest ranking ever was No. 2, and its best year-end finish was 21st. Princeton finished 39th a year ago.

The Tigers took the early lead in the rankings based on the field hockey national championship and a program-best 11th place finish in the NCAA men's cross country championships. The first poll also includes points for women's cross country.

The first ranking does not include the points that Princeton will be getting for going two rounds into the women's soccer tournament.

In the 19 years the Cup has been awarded, Princeton has finished 47th or better 16 times, with 14 top 40 finishes and five top 30 finishes. Princeton has never finished below 63rd.
