PRINCETON -- One big inning delivered a win for Penn in Saturday's opener against the Princeton softball team, while the Tigers rallied for a win in game two.

Each team fell three games behind Cornell in the Ivy South division after the Big Red swept Columbia Saturday. The Tigers are now 12-21 overall, 6-4 in the Ivy while the Quakers are 21-14, 6-4 in the league. The teams will meet again Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the Class of 1895 Field, weather permitting.

Game 1: Penn 8, Princeton 0

Princeton starter Liza Kuhn retired 12 straight Penn batters from the third through sixth inning, but the Quakers erupted for eight runs in an 8-0 win.

Penn had notched just one hit over the first six innings, a leadoff single by Jessica Arneson in the third, while Princeton regretted some missed opportunities as Kuhn (5-9) mowed down the Quaker batters. Princeton had two on with none out in the fourth and sixth innings but came up empty both times against Penn pitcher Alexis Borden (13-4), who finished with five hits and a walk allowed, striking out four.

Penn had seven hits in the seventh inning including three homers while piling up the eight runs. Kelsey VandeBergh finished the opener 2 for 2 with a walk for the Tigers.

Game 2: Princeton 4, Penn 3

While Saturday's opener featured lots of zeroes and one big inning, the second game went Princeton's way when the Tigers put up two runs in the fourth and held on for a 4-3 win.

Penn led 1-0 after one inning and 2-0 in the middle of the third, scratching out one run at a time, before Princeton got on the board courtesy of a Nicole Ontiveros RBI-single in the bottom of the third.

The Tigers turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead in the fourth, starting with an Alex Peyton single and a Maddie Cousens double to put two in scoring position with none out. Candy Button singled to drive one home and Rachel Rendina picked up the second RBI on a would-be groundout that instead let Rendina reach on an error.

Princeton tacked on another run in the fifth when Cousens drove home Cara Worden to make it 4-2, and that run proved important after Penn started to rally. A double and a single in the sixth for Penn, both with two out, made it 4-3 before Peyton (5-8) ended the threat, and the Tiger pitcher got the Quakers in order in the seventh to preserve the victory.

Cousens had two of Princeton's eight hits against Penn pitcher Mikenzie Voves (6-6).
