Release: 05/11/2011

Bedford Field was completed in the summer of 2012 and is a state-of-the-art facility solely dedicated to Princeton field hockey. The multimillion-dollar stadium is adjacent to the Class of 1952 Stadium, where the Princeton lacrosse teams play.

Bedford features an optimal playing surface for field hockey in a revolutionary artificial turf field and has a built-in watering system. The playing surface was designed with the ability to hold a consistent amount water over a longer period of time, while providing a fast enough surface and enough drainage to prevent puddles.

The field also features an Underhill water cannon system, with eight underground heads providing uniform water distribution over the entire playing surface. The use of the retracting sprinklers will drastically cut down on watering time, as the system will be able to adequately water the field in six minutes and use less than 2,000 gallons of water versus the old system that used as much as 12,000 gallons to wet the field. The cannons will be able to programmed remotely.

Bedford will be lined with metric marks, making the field one of the only fields in the United States meeting the FIH (International Field Hockey Federation) metric line standard. Princeton will be able to host international events at any level.

Currently there are 1,200 seats with room for additional temporary seating. Phase II of the project will be completed by August 2013, featuring new team rooms, concession areas and restrooms. The press box overlooking Class of 52 Stadium will be expanded to look over Bedford Field, as well.
