The Princeton Varsity Club and Director of Athletics, Gary Walters '67, are most fortunate and proud to announce and welcome former Princeton Professor, Arnold Rampersad, back to campus as part of the Jake McCandless '51 PVC Speaker Series. Currently, a Professor Emeritus at Stanford University, Rampersad wrote "Jackie Robinson: A Biography," and co-authored "Days of Grace: A Memoir" with Arthur Ashe. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society.

In March of this year, Rampersad was presented with the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama, joining Princeton honorees Stan Katz and Joyce Carol Oates at the award ceremony in the White House. The medal honors individuals or groups whose work has deepened the nation's understanding of the humanities, broadened our citizens' engagement with the humanities, or helped preserve and expand Americans' access to important resources in the humanities.

His talk, entitled "Athletics and Social Justice: The Lives of Jackie Robinson and Arthur Ashe," will take place at McCosh Hall, Room 10, at 8:00 PM on April 14, 2011. Admission is free and open to the public.

Director Walters stated that "the Princeton Varsity Club and the Princeton community are honored and fortunate to attract such a distinguished American scholar as Arnold Rampersad back to our campus. Through his definitive study of Jackie Robinson and Arthur Ashe, Arnold has gained a unique perspective about the role that those black citizen-athlete-icons played in advancing the Civil Rights movement in America. His talk should be enlightening and inspiring, an opportunity for current Princeton student-athletes to learn personally about the courage and moral will of Robinson and Ashe." (You could move this paragraph above the preceding one.)

The Jake McCandless '51 PVC Speaker Series began in 2004 with a lecture from NCAA President Myles Brand. The series was endowed in the name of J. L. "Jake" McCandless '51, who coached Princeton to the 1969 Ivy League football championship during the Tigers' centennial year of football.
