PRINCETON, N.J. (9/10/10) - Senior Benjamin Burton scored in the 87th minute sparking the Tigers into action but the Princeton men's soccer team couldn't get the equalizer as American won a 2-1 game on Friday, Sept. 10 in the home opener at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.

Sophomore Mark Linnville took a deep throw in that made its way into the box. A scrum ensued and Burton was able to contort his body to get the ball on the near side and put it into the back of the net.

The goal gave Princeton momentum as they took two shots and had two corner kicks in the remaining 3:28 but it was too little too late.

During that final time, a yellow card was given to American's goalkeeper with 44 seconds left for delay of game after a wide shot by sophomore Matt Sanner resulted in a goal kick.

With less than 20 seconds to play Princeton was awarded its 10th corner kick and Antoine Hoppenot quickly placed the ball and lofted the shot into the box. A scramble for the ball resulted in senior Brandon Busch striking the ball for the would-be equalizer but the ball ricocheted off the cross bar and was then lofted down the field by an American defender as the clock sounded.

American's Alassane Kane scored an early goal 8:05 into the game when he picked up a long ball from Adem Gortuk just across the midfield line and sped past his defender to the goal where he shot to the left of keeper Sean Lynch.

Both teams had frames of dominance but at the end of the half Princeton had taken seven shots to American's three. The biggest difference was the 5-0 corner kick advantage Princeton had at the close of the half. In fact, Princeton would conclude the game with a 10-2 corner kick difference.

That fact left a sour taste in Princeton's mouth as American grabbed a 2-0 lead with a goal on one of its two corners. Jamie Davin took the corner on the far side and Eli Dennis was able to knock the ball down so that it could be played. Seth Goldman put a foot on the ball and sent it over the goal line.

Princeton's captain Lynch finished the game making five saves on seven shots, while American's Matt Makowski stopped four shots and allowed one.

Princeton outshot American 15-10, while fouls were nearly even with American picking up 11 and to Princeton's 10. The Eagles earned three yellow cards in the game while Princeton earned just one.

Princeton falls to 1-2 on the season, and American improves to 2-1.

Princeton has a week off to prepare for its next opponent, Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
