USA WATER POLO RELEASE

PRINCETON, N.J. – After helping the women’s senior national team to a gold medal at the 2014 Kirishi Cup, Princeton University water polo rising junior Ashleigh Johnson earned a spot on the Team USA roster for the upcoming FINA World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

Slated to begin on August 12, Johnson and the women’s national team will play three group matches against South Africa (8/12), Australia (8/13) and Hungary (8/14) prior to the quarterfinals on August 15. The tournament’s semifinal round is scheduled for August 16 with the championship set for August 17.

Last month, Johnson went 2-0-1 at the Kirishi Cup, amassing 37 saves in 10 quarters en route to Player of the Tournament honors. Seeing her first action in a 10-6 victory over Russia, Johnson made 14 stops before racking up a record 17 saves in a 7-7 draw against Spain. In the final against Netherlands, she allowed just one first half goal while posting six first half saves.

In her two seasons with the Tigers, Johnson has helped Princeton to a pair of CWPA Southern Division titles. Last year, the standout goalkeeper logged 885:35 minutes in net, posting a 28-2 overall record with a .704 save percentage, 43 steals and seven assists. During her rookie season, Johnson went 28-6 in her 32 appearances with a .668 save percentage, 22 assists and 47 steals.

The United States will look to defend its 2010 World Cup championship that it won in Christchurch, New Zealand. The title was Team USA’s first since 1979.
