USA WOMEN'S WATER POLO RELEASE

PRINCETON, N.J. – Ashleigh Johnson of the Princeton University women’s water polo program has been named to the United States senior national team roster as the squad prepares to head to Kirishi, Russia to compete in the 2014 Kirishi Cup.

Team USA head coach Adam Krikorian and 15 players will compete in the five-day tournament slated to begin on July 1. A former member of the US junior national team, Johnson started in net during the FINA Junior World Championships, earning Goalie of the Tournament honors after helping to lead the United States to a gold medal.

Joining Olympic gold medalist and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Hall of Fame inductee Betsey Armstrong (University of Michigan) as the only CWPA goalies to ever make the national team roster, Johnson recently garnered ACWPC honorable mention All-America recognition.

Logging 885:35 minutes in net, the rising junior posted a 28-2 overall record during her sophomore season, thanks in part to a stellar .704 save percentage. Also amassing 43 steals and seven assists, she helped Princeton lay claim to the CWPA Southern Division title, ultimately guiding the Tigers to a second-place showing at the CWPA Championship.

Bursting onto the scene as a freshman in 2013, she played 953:49 minutes, going 28-6 in 32 starts with a .668 save percentage, 22 assists and 47 steals. Helping Princeton capture both the Southern Division and CWPA crowns, Johnson played an integral role in the team’s fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, making a then-tournament record 38 stops against UC-San Diego in the squad’s final match.

The United States will open play on July 1 against Hungary before taking on host Russia (7/2). The Red, white and blue will then face Italy (7/3) before squaring off against Spain (7/4) and the Netherlands (7/5).  All matches will be streamed live and can be seen by clicking here.
