Thirty hockey players were named the 2013-14 American Hockey League (AHL) Man of the Year for their respective clubs this week and incredibly, but not surprisingly, three are Princeton alums.

Taylor Fedun '11 earns his first Man of the Year honor, while Kyle Hagel '08 picks up his fourth and Mike Moore '08 his third.

Taylor Fedun (Okalahoma City Barrons)
Barons defenseman Taylor Fedun approached the team’s front office about instituting a program he was a part of at Princeton University. "Stick to Reading" is an incentive based program where Barons players team with an elementary school to promote the importance of reading to young kids.

The six-week program was instituted at Whiz Kids at Cherokee Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. Whiz Kids is a faith-based after school program that benefits kids in “at risk” schools. The Whiz Kids program at Cherokee Hills benefits TuLakes Elementary. There are over 50 Whiz Kids programs in Oklahoma City.

Over the six weeks of the program, the students keep track of how many books/pages/time spent reading on some kind of a board in their class room. While gaining valuable experience reading, the students also use motivation in the form of Barons hat, lunch boxes and puzzles to continue their reading efforts. The Grand Prize winner attends a Barons game as a guest of Taylor, including a locker room tour and an autographed stick. - from OKC press release

Kyle Hagel (Portland Pirates)
As a new member of the Pirates for the 2013-14 season, Hagel brought his wealth of charitable knowledge and experience to the Pirates community through his work with schools and youth hockey. Hagel participated in the Pirates’ Goals for Success program, educating 230 4th and 5th graders at Montello Elementary School in Auburn on the importance of healthy living, setting goals, and living tobacco free during an assembly.

Through Hockey Players 4 Kids, a charity co-founded by Hagel, Kyle started the Stick to Reading program in schools in the Portland region, visiting a number of schools to read to students and encouraging reading by students outside the classroom. Hagel organized the program with the help of his teammates, and enlisted the help of several players to read to students and visit the winning school, Scarborough Middle School, for a floor hockey game.

Hagel has also volunteered his time with the Portland Junior Pirates, participating in a number of practices and clinics throughout the season.

This is Hagel’s 4th consecutive season in which he has been his team’s IOA/American Specialty Man of the Year, as he has previously been honored with the Hamilton Bulldogs (12-13), Peoria Rivermen (11-12) and Rockford IceHogs (10-11). - from Portland press release

Mike Moore (Providence Bruins)

This is the first time Moore has earned the honor with Providence, but was twice named the Worcester Sharks Man of the Year, in 2008-09 and 2009-10.

Celebrated for his annual toy drive "Give Moore for the Holidays", Moore has also been incolved in a "Be a Leader" campaign for students, "Reading is Cool" appearances and for being a volunteer fire fighter.

The trio are now finalists for the AHL's 2013-14 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The award is named after the late AHL All-Star Yanick Dupré, who died in 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia.
