BALTIMORE, Md. (2/22/14) - Senior Sarah Lloyd and freshman Anna Doherty both had hat tricks while junior Erin McMunn had a four-point game as the No. 17 Princeton women's lacrosse team lost its season opener 15-10 to No. 6 Loyola.
Annie Thomas led Loyola with five points on three goals and two assists. Hannah Schmitt and Marlee Paton both had hat tricks and Taryn VanThof had a goal and two helpers.
Paton nearly single-handily gave Loyola the lead scoring three of her team's first four goals as the Greyhounds took a 5-1 lead midway through the first half. Doherty and junior Erin Slifer both scored to cut the Princeton deficit to just two.
Loyola added two more goals before McMunn scored her first goal of the season to make it a 7-4 game at halftime.
Princeton came out strong in the second half and a made it a two-goal game on senior Mary-Kate Sivilli's goal at 23:21, 8-6.
The Tigers tried to creep closer but were down just 10-7 before a five-goal Loyola run in a span of 5:12 made the hole much bigger to climb out of at 14-7, the largest lead of the game.
Lloyd added her second and third goals but Thomas halted the run with a goal at 3:03 to make it 15-9.
Doherty would deliver the final tally, an unassisted goal with 21 seconds left.
Senior Caroline Franke made two saves in the first 42:03. She was replaced by freshman Ellie DeGarmo who allowed four shots in the final 17:57. Loyola's Molly Wolf made 11 saves in her second win of the season.
Princeton had a slight 27-26 edge in shots and a 13-11 advantage in ground balls. Loyola won one more draw control, 14-13.
Slifer who finished the game with one goal and one assist led the Tigers at the circle with six draw controls. Senior defender Colleen Smith had four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
The Tigers host Rutgers in the home opener on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m., on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
