The loss all but eliminates reigning Ivy champion Princeton from the league race, as the Tigers are now two matches behind both Harvard and Yale, and one match behind Penn. However, the Tigers know they will have the chance to welcome all of those programs to the Jadwin Squash Courts in less than one month for the Howe Cup national team championships.
Penn, which has now won four straight home matches over Princeton, needed a 4-1 advantage during the second shift to clinch the win. Both teams split the first four matches, which included a pair of Tiger wins from sophomore Rachel Leizman and junior Hallie Dewey.
Leizman took out Courtney Jones at the No. 4 spot in three games, which kept Princeton within one match early. Dewey was pushed to a fifth game by Michelle Wong, but she pulled out the big points late to win the match with an 11-6 fifth and even the team score.
Penn got off to a quick start in the second shift, grabbing leads in both the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. In a showdown of two of the nation’s top freshmen, Penn’s Anaka Alankamony defeated Maria Elena Ubina in three games at the No. 1 spot, and Heidi Lala defeated Nicole Bunyan in three games at the No. 3 spot.
While Princeton sophomore Tara Harrington was pushing Ailsa Agnew in an eventual 3-1 win at the No. 9 spot, Penn earned the team win with a 3-1 victory at the No. 7 spot.
Penn finished the match with a victory from Camille Lanier at the No. 5 spot. She rallied past Alex Lunt with wins of 11-8 and 11-9 in the final two games.
Princeton, which hasn’t played a home match since November, will play three times at Jadwin this weekend. The Tigers host Brown Saturday morning at 11 am, and they will take on both Yale (noon) and Stanford (3 pm) Sunday.
