Princeton's men's and women's fencing teams have been given high billing as the 2013-14 season heads into its climactic months of February and March.

The Tiger women were ranked first in the nation in the season's initial CollegeFencing360.com poll, the poll used by the NCAA, receiving eight of the 10 first-place votes. Princeton's men were ranked third.

The top-10 poll consisted of four Ivy League women's and five Ivy men's teams, with Harvard's women coming in second, Columbia's sixth and Penn's eighth. Columbia topped the men's poll, with Harvard fifth, Penn eighth and Brown ninth.

Though the full team will return to competition Feb. 1 at Northwestern, several Princeton fencers competed individually this past weekend as far away as Qatar and as close as Virginia Beach.

In Qatar, nearly 7,000 miles away from Princeton, junior Katharine Holmes helped Team USA to a fourth-place finish of 22 teams at the Epee World Cup while finishing 48th individually in a field of 145 (Team results here and individual results here). Holmes was second individually among Americans behind only Notre Dame alumna and U.S. teammate Courtney Hurley. Alumnus Soren Thompson '05 finished 29th of 153 individuals on the men's side (results here).

A little more than 300 miles away from Princeton in Virginia Beach, Va., freshman Alex House, sophomore Gracie Stone and sophomore Anna Van Brummen competed at the North American Cup event, with House winning bronze in the under-20 men's epee competition in a field of 180. In the larger Division I field, House finished 35th of 255. Stone placed sixth of 92 in the U20 women's saber field while taking seventh of 108 in the Division I event, and Van Brummen was seventh of 120 in the U20 women's epee competition while placing 33rd of 132 in the Division I field.

Results for all the NAC events can be found here.
