2013 NCAA Championship Bracket

The defending national champion Princeton field hockey team will open the 2013 NCAA tournament with at-large bid recipient Penn State on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. in the first round. The Tigers return to a familiar site in No. 1 seed Maryland’s Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex for the opening rounds.

Princeton (13-4, 7-0 Ivy) heads to NCAAs for the 19th time in program history, including 10th consecutive season, after clinching the outright Ivy League title Saturday.

Michelle Cesan’s hot hand headlines Princeton’s offense entering the postseason. The senior midfielder has 10 goals and nine assists, both team-highs, on the year. In goal, Anya Gersoff (9-3) sports a 1.49 goals against average and has a .738 saves percentage on 45 saves over 12 appearances.

A regular season rematch is on deck for the Tigers in opening round opponent Penn State. The two squads met on Sept. 15 at Bedford Field, with the then-No. 13 Nittany Lions coming out on top, 4-3. They dealt the Tigers their first loss of the year and snapped Princeton’s 17-game winning streak.

Since its meeting earlier this year, Penn State (13-5, 5-1 Big Ten) climbed into the national top-10. The Tigers and Nittany Lions have faced three mutual opponents in Delaware, Michigan State and UConn – both owning identical 2-1 records in those matches. PSU is coming off a semifinal 4-3 overtime loss to Iowa at the Big Ten Tournament.

The Penn State offense is led by Taylor Herold and Brittany Grywacz’s 12 and 11 goals, respectively. Kylie Licata is the team’s lone goalkeeper, tallying 64 saves, a .703 saves percentage and a 1.43 goals against average.

Host Maryland will face the winner of the Quinnipiac – American match in the NCAA Play-In Game on Wednesday, Nov. 13. The second round is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m.
