Baseball Announces Class of 2017

Princeton baseball head coach Scott Bradley has announced the Class of 2017, adding depth to the roster in all positions. The Tigers welcome eight newcomers from across the country for the upcoming 2014 campaign in: Dan Baer, Zach Belski, Chris Giglio, Nick Hernandez, Bryce Keller, Chad Powers, Keelan Smithers and Paul Tupper. The squad has also extended an invitation to walk-on to Cody Phillips.

Dan Baer • OF • L/R
Edina, Minn./St. Thomas Academy

High School: A 2013 graduate of St. Thomas Academy … three-year letterwinner and starter … team captain … also earned three letters in football and played basketball as a freshman.

Played club baseball for Edina America Legion from 2011-13 … named Rookie of the Year … team went 43-8 in 2012 and won state championship and reached Central Plains Regional Final Four … in 2013 squad was a state semifinalist behind 29-9 record.

Personal: Full name is Daniel Winge Baer, born June 8, 1994 … youngest son of Cammy and Tim Baeur … Tim ’82 played hockey at Princeton … has three brothers: Jack, a former hockey player at Amherst, Matthew and Michael …  plans on majoring in economics … hopes to continue baseball career following college … student body vice president, four-time Eagle Award Winner, Citizenship Award recipient and top-six in senior leadership.

Zach Belski • 1B/IF/OF • L/R
Missouri City, Texas/John Foster Dulles

High School: A 2013 graduate of John Foster Dulles High School … three-year letterwinner and starter … had 98 hits, 72 RBI, 10 home runs and 87 walks over prep career … as a sophomore, was named Team co-MVP and Houston5Abaseball.com All-Houston Honorable Mention … as a junior, earned Team co-MVP honors, All-District 23-5A First Team first baseman, Fort Bend Sun Newspaper First Team All-County infielder and All-Houston Third Team first baseman honors … team finished year district and area champions … as a senior, named All-District First Team first baseman and All-Houston Second Team first baseman … FDHS was district, area and regional champions … lost in 5A State Championship game and finished with a 32-8 record.

Played club baseball for Houston Kyle Chapman for three years.

Personal: Full name is Zack Ryan Belski, born Nov. 10, 1994 … youngest son of Sherryl and Rick Belski … has an older brother, Kyle, who played baseball at Southwestern University in Texas … plans on majoring in economic and hopes to become a Major League Baseball general manager … AP Scholar, member of the National Honor Society and graduated Magna Cum Laude … earned academic excellence accolades throughout high school career … Academic All-District 23-5A as a senior … finalist for Touchdown Club of Houston Baseball Scholar Athlete Award.

Chris Giglio • RHP • R/R
New York, N.Y./Collegiate School

High School: A 2013 graduate of Collegiate School … three-year letterwinner and starter … earned all-conference honors … also competed in indoor track and was a two-time all-conference selection … earned three gold, two silver and a bronze medal in the 4x200m relay, long jump and triple jump.

Played club baseball for Midland Redskins helping guide team to 42-3 record … also competed for Team New York in 2010-11 and the Tampa Warriors, earning all-tournament accolades at the BSC Final.

Personal: Full name is Christopher Gregory Giglio, born May 24, 1995 … oldest child of Ana and Graz Giglio … Graz played soccer at Duke … has two siblings: Alex and Matthew … plans on majoring in computer engineering … would like to play professional baseball or work at a technology company … high school did not award academic honors.

Nick Hernandez • 1B • L/L
Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Preparatory

High School: A 2013 graduate of Belen Jesuit Preparatory … two-year letterwinner and starter … team was 2012 district champions … earned All-Dade Honorable Mention honors in 2012. 

Personal: Full name is Nicholas Hector Hernandez, born August 11, 1994 … oldest child of Maryann and Henry Hernandez … has two sisters: Jessica and Mia … plans on majoring in economics and hopes to attend law school following graduation … was a writer and editor for school newspaper … a member of the National Honors Society and named to Math Honors Society.

Bryce Keller • RHP • R/R
Port Washington, N.Y./ Port Washington Schreiber

High School: A 2013 graduate of Port Washington Schreiber High School … three-year letterwinner and starter … over career earned all-league, all-conference and all-county honors … tabbed Long Island All-Star Game Nassau County MVP … named to Under Armour Team One Futures Team … two-year high school MVP … earned Athletic Achievement Award for Excellence in baseball … over varsity career amassed 207 strikeouts over 106.6 innings and sported a 1.49 ERA … as a sophomore, had 1.50 ERA and 48 strikeouts over 37.3 innings … as a junior, tossed 81 strikeouts over 37 innings with a 1.70 ERA … as a senior, tallied 78 strikeouts over 32.3 innings, a 1.30 ERA and batted .386 … once struck out 20 batters over a seven-inning span ... earned one letter in cross country and participated in ski racing at Junior Olympics.

Played for the Long Island Tigers club team for three years … in June 2012 struck out 15 en route to a no-hitter shutout. 

Personal: Full name is Bryce Chesler Keller … youngest son of Susan and Bob Keller … has an older brother, Everett, who played baseball at Hofstra … plans on majoring in operations research and financial engineering … a member of the National Honors Society, and Foreign Language, Science and Math honor societies … earned Principal’s Honor Roll accolades throughout prep career.

Chad Powers • IF/RHP • R/R
La Cañada, Calif./Loyola

High School: A 2013 graduate of Loyola High School … three-year letterwinner and starter … 2013 All-Mission League selection and earned the Mike Scioscia’s Awared of Excellence … as a senior team was CIF Southern Section DI semifinalist with 22-11 record … led team in hitting with .375 average.

Played for the ABD Bulldogs club team for eight years … named 2013 Rawlings California All-Region Second Team … squad was Perfect Game Underclass National Champions in 2010.

Personal: Full name is Chad Powers, born Oct. 17. 1994 … oldest child of Jodi and Michael Powers … father played soccer at Loyola Marymount … has two sisters: Kaitlin and Julia … plans on majoring in engineering and hopes to play professional baseball … a National Merit Scholar, National AP Scholar and an Eagle Scout.

Keelan Smithers • LHP • L/L
Framingham, Mass./Belmont Hill School

High School: A 2013 graduate of Belmont Hill School … a three-year letterwinner and two-year starter … two-time All-ISL First Team selection … 2013 ISL Pitcher of the Year … 2013 ISL MVP … went 11-0 over two seasons as starting pitcher … also played basketball.

Played for the New England Ruffnecks baseball club for one season.

Personal: Full name is Keelen John Smithers, born June 24, 1994 … the middle child of Deirdre and Mark Smithers … has two siblings: Megan and Niamh … plans on majoring in economics or in the Woodrow Wilson School … an AP Scholar … 2013 Boston Globe All-Scholastic.

Paul Tupper • OF • R/R
Milford, Conn./Hopkins School

High School: A 2013 graduate of the Hopkins School … a three-year letterwinner and starter … team captain as a senior … two-time All-Fairchester League … named to New Haven Register All-Area team as a senior … tabbed New Haven Register Star of the Day and Slugger of the Week … Walter Camp Athletic Award winner … also played basketball and was a three-year letterwinner and two-year starter.

Played club ball for Baseball U in New England for three years.

Personal: Full name is Paul Joseph Tupper, born Nov. 16, 1994 … the only child of Jean and Paul Tupper … relatives Bill Bergeron played baseball at Duke and for the New York Yankees Double-A affiliate, John Dunster played football at Fordham and Tessa Dunster played soccer at Post … plans on majoring in economic and hopes to go into investment banking … an accomplished pianist … National Merit Commended Scholar, AP Scholar, National Spanish Exam Gold Medalist and Delaney Kiphuth History Prize recipient.
