On Friday Princeton’s three-player contingent in Major League Baseball were all in action, with pitcher David Hale ’11 making his Atlanta Brave debut versus fellow former Tiger and current San Diego Padre Will Venable ’05. While Hale and Venable were facing off in Atlanta, Ross Ohlendorf ’06 improved to 4-0 with the Washington Nationals.

Hale fanned nine batters over five scoreless innings, including striking out the side in the first inning. In a unique moment, Hale’s first-ever MLB batter faced was Venable. His nine strikeouts set a new Brave franchise record in a Big League debut.

Hale, who grew up outside Atlanta in Marietta, scattered four hits over his outing and left the game with a 3-0 lead. He would finish with a no decision, as Venable’s Padres scored four runs over the seventh and eighth frames to win 4-3. Hale’s outing was dubbed the “Goodyear Superior Performance” by ESPN’s SportCenter.

In D.C., pitcher Ohlendorf paced Washington to a 6-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. The righty went five innings, allowing only one run with three strikeouts.

Ohlendorf has made 15 appearances and six starts for the club since being recalled. Along with being 4-0 on the mound, he’s tallied 39 strikeouts and only conceded 19 runs spanning 54.1 innings of work.
