Johnson '16 Named to USA Water Polo FINA Junior World Championship Team
USA Water Polo Release
Princeton goalie Ashleigh Johnson ’16 has been named to the USA Water Polo women’s FINA Junior World Championships roster, it was announced by U.S. Junior National Team head coach Dan Klatt Thursday.
The tournament will run from Aug. 19-25 in Volos, Greece. The U.S. will open group play with Kazakhstan on the 19th, followed by meetings with Italy and New Zealand to conclude pool play.
“I am very proud and excited for Ashleigh to earn this opportunity,” said Princeton head coach Luis Nicolao. “It will be great to see her compete against the elite players in the world and gain valuable experience playing at the international level.”
Johnson is one of 13 players selected to the squad, in addition to a pair of alternates, and is the lone East Coast representative. She previously spent time with the U.S. Youth National Team in 2010 and 2011.
An immediate impact player for the Tigers this past season, Johnson collected numerous accolades including being named an ACWPC All-America Third Team selection. She is only the fourth Princetonian to be named to the third team and first since 2002.
Along with her All-America honors, she was named the CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Year and Eastern Championship Rookie of the Tournament, and to the All-Southern and all-tournament first teams.
Johnson started all 34 games in the cage, finishing with a 28-6 record. She tallied 366 saves, a single-season program record, 47 steals, 22 assists and a 0.668 saves percentage. The Florida native made her collegiate debut a memorable one, setting Princeton’s single-game saves record with 19 versus perennial power California on national television.
Johnson and the Tigers won both the Southern Division and Eastern Championship titles and finished with a program-best fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championship in 2013.
