Newly minted Princeton graduate Eliza Stone and rising junior Katharine Holmes each won silver medals in their weapons and gold with their teams at the Pan American Championships in Colombia.

In Monday's saber competition, Stone was second only to fellow American Mariel Zagunis, five years Stone's senior and a two-time Olympic gold medalist, in a field of 44 competitors from 15 countries throughout the Americas.

Stone entered the 32-woman direct elimination bracket as the No. 1 seed and got past Canadian Heather Shacker 15-7, Vanessa Infante of Mexico 15-9, fellow American Ibtihaj Muhammad 15-14, and another American Dagmara Wozniak 15-14 to reach the final, where Zagunis defeated Stone 15-12.

Tuesday, Holmes finished second in a field of 44 behind only reigning NCAA epee champion Courtney Hurley. Holmes entered the direct elimination bracket as the No. 9 seed and defeated Argentinian Andrea Cristina Chiuchich 15-5, Brazilian Amanda Simeao 15-6, Joanna Guy of Canada 15-10 and Brazilian Cleia Guilhon 15-6 to reach the final. Hurley edged Holmes 15-14 for the gold two matches after Holmes had upset the bracket's top seed, Guy.

In the team saber competition, Stone went on to win gold with Wozniak and Zagunis. The Americans, seeded first, defeated the Dominican Republic 45-24, Canada 45-20, and Mexico 45-27 to win. Holmes, with fellow Princetonian Maya Lawrence '02 as well as Courtney Hurley and Kelley Hurley, helped the top-seeded American epeeists defeat Cuba 45-31, Canada 45-19 and Brazil 45-37 in the final.

In August, Stone, Holmes and Lawrence will represent the U.S. at the World Fencing Championships in Hungary.
