GREENSBORO, N.C. (5/24/13) - Three more members of the Princeton track & field teams are headed to the NCAA Championships after qualifying on Day 2 of the East Regional. A total of five Tigers have now qualified for the finals.
Freshman Julia Ratcliffe got the day started by qualifying in the hammer throw, the first member of the Princeton women's track & field team to advance to Eugene, Ore. Ratcliffe had the first throw of flight 2 and surpassed all throws in flight one with a 59.74 (196-0). She threw her best throw on her third attempt, reaching 63.04 (206-10). Ratcliffe also reached 60.55, 60.71, 62.57 and 61.42. She finished fourth overall and will compete for the national title on June 5.
Senior Austin Hollimon punched his ticket to Eugene by winning his heat in the 400-meter hurdles. He clocked a 51.02 the second fastest time in the quarterfinal round, after posting a 51.31 in the first round yesterday.
The fifth Tiger to advance to the Championships is senior Russell Dinkins. Dinkins won the first heat of the 800 at 1:51.58. In the same heat junior Bradley Paternostro ran 1:52.87 to place sixth and 21st overall.
Dinkins and Hollimon were both members of the distance medley relay that won the indoor national championship.
Senior Tory Worthen finished fourth in her flight of the pole vault. She cleared the first height of 3.70 (12-1.5) on her second attempt and did the same at the second height of 3.85 912-7.5). At 4.00 (13-5.5) she cleared on her second attempt but did not get over 4.10 on her three attempts. Worthen finished 15th overall just missing the top 12.
In the 400, junior Tom Hopkins claimed the lap in 47.16 to finish fifth in the first heat and 16th overall.
Sophomore Cecilia Barowski was sixth in heart 1 of the 800 at 2:08.34 and 14th overall.
Senior Mel Newbery placed 11th in heat 2 of the steeplechase with a time of 10:35.83 to finish 35th overall. Sophomore Connor Martin was ninth in heat 2 of the steeplechase at 8:59.94 to finish 21st overall.
