Shon Heads for Auburn, NCAA East Regional
In the above video, Princeton women's golf coach Nicki Cutler and Kelly Shon talk about Shon winning the Ivy individual title and gaining an NCAA Regional berth.
Princeton junior Kelly Shon will play in the NCAA East Regional as an individual for the third time in as many years as a Tiger.
The three-round tournament will run Thursday through Saturday at Auburn's University Club in Auburn, Ala. At stake is one of just two individual berths to the NCAA championship at the University of Georgia May 21-24. Shon's first-round tee time Thursday is 9:25 a.m. ET
Shon is in a field of 126 golfers, representing 24 full teams and five other individuals. Once the top eight teams have been decided, the top two players not on those teams will get the NCAA final berths.
Counting this year, Princeton players or teams have played in 12 NCAA Regionals, all since 1995. Shon's berth is the ninth for a Princeton player individually, along with three team appearances. Shon is just the third Princetonian to appear in three NCAA Regionals with her teammates or as an individual, alongside Mary Moan '97 and Avery Kiser '05. No Tiger has played in four NCAAs, something Shon will have the chance to do next year.
Moan is also the only Tiger to play in the NCAA finals. She earned one of the two individual berths out of the East Regional in 1997, tying for fifth overall in the regional field.
Shon had earned NCAA individual bids in each of her first two years without winning the Ivy League title, which does not come with an automatic NCAA individual berth. This year, after two All-Ivy finishes, she broke through and won the Ivy individual title in a playoff, winning Ivy Player of the Year honors and becoming the first Princeton player since Susannah Aboff '09 in 2009 to be the Ivy medalist. Aboff was also the last Tiger to play in an NCAA Regional before Shon.
The Ivy individual title was the fourth tournament title Shon has won at Princeton, following the Low Country Intercollegiate and the Brown Invitational as a freshman and the Lehigh Invitational this season.
