In recognition of her two victories last weekend for the Princeton softball team, senior Alex Peyton was named the sport's Ivy League Pitcher of the Week.
It's the second Ivy weekly award in Peyton's career. She was named the Ivy Pitcher of the Week on April 12, 2011. Princeton has won four previous Ivy weekly awards this season, as freshman Shanna Christian was named Ivy Pitcher and Rookie of the Week on March 5, sophomore Alyssa Schmidt was the Ivy Player of the Week on March 5, and freshman Emily Viggers was the Ivy Rookie of the Week on March 19.
Peyton threw 13 innings over the weekend and didn't give up an earned run, going the distance in the first halves of doubleheaders against Brown and Yale. Princeton was a hit away from finishing the weekend undefeated in Ivy play but came up just short in the second game against Yale, standing tied atop the Ivy South division at 3-1 entering the second weekend of league play.
She struck out 10 and walked just three over the weekend while running her streak without an earned run allowed to 22 1/3 innings. Peyton lowered her ERA from 2.45 to 1.93 over the course of the weekend.
But Peyton's contributions extended beyond the circle. She also hit .417 (5-12) over the two doubleheaders, hitting two home runs in the second game against Brown, capping a day in which she drove in six runs over the twinbill.
Peyton and the Tigers will host Villanova for a single game at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Class of 1895 Field.
