For the Princeton women's lightweight Class of 2013, Senior Day came earlier than usual. But it was also as memorable as possible. In a matchup of the last two EAWRC champions, Princeton defeated Wisconsin by more than 13 seconds for an ideal start to the season.

In only their second regular season matchup on Lake Carnegie since 2001, Princeton took the varsity eight race in 6:45.4, while Wisconsin took second in 6:59.1.

"It's always a thrill to beat a team like Wisconsin, as they are well coached and have tremendous athletes," Princeton head coach Paul Rassam said. "I was really happy for our seniors to enjoy their last home race like this. They deserve it.

"Having said all that, we are aware that Wisconsin has had even less water time than usual heading into this spring season and that they will be much tougher to beat the next time we see them," Rassam added. Princeton also picked up a victory in the second varsity competition. The Tigers finished the 2K course in 7:10.6, while Wisconsin took second in 7:10.6.

"We have a good group of walk-ons this year," Rassam said. "Many of them are already impacting our 2V8. Coach Zimmerman has done a tremendous job of developing these athletes. He has been a very solid addition to our program." The novice four pushed Wisconsin in its race, going 8:24.0 to fall by eight seconds.

Princeton will head west next weekend to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic.

"I'm anxious to see what our squad can do this year," Rassam said. "We are clearly in a stronger position overall than we were last year, even though our team continues to be pretty young overall. We have a truly challenging race schedule, where we will see all of the best teams multiple times. We will have many opportunities to learn, mature, and improve. I can't wait."
