Princeton Hosts Cornell in ECAC First-Round Series This Weekend

PRINCETON, N.J. (3/7/13) - The Princeton men's hockey hosts Cornell in the ECAC Tournament first-round series at Hobey Baker Rink this weekend. In a best-of-three series, the No. 8 Tigers will face the No. 9 Big Red on Friday, March 8 at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 9 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, March 10 at 7 p.m. (if necessary).

EYE ON THE TIGERS
Princeton hopes to carry the momentum from last weekend’s thrilling 2-1 overtime win over Harvard into the playoffs. The Tigers are 10-14-5 overall and 8-10-4 in the league.

Junior Andrew Calof is the team’s leading scorer. He scored his 100th career point on the game winner at Harvard. This season he has 13 goals and 23 assists for 36 points. Sophomore Tyler Maugeri has 23 points on nine goals and 14 helpers. Junior Andrew Ammon has eight goals, who of which were game-winning goals, and assists apiece. Senior Michael Sdao (OTT) is the team’s leading scoring defender with eight goals and seven assists. Senior Eric Meland, Rob Kleebaum, junior Jack Berger and freshman Mike Ambrosia are also in double figures in scoring. Senior Mike Condon has made 20 starts in goal this season and has a .925 save percentage and a 2.42 goals against average. Junior Sean Bonar has made nine starts and has a .901 save percentage and a 3.24 GAA.

THE PRINCETON/CORNELL SERIES
Princeton swept Cornell during the regular season, winning 5-3 here at Hobey Baker Rink in November and 1-0 at Lynah Rink in February. Cornell holds a 79-53-8 lead in the all-time series which began in 1900-01. Senior Eric Meland and junior Andrew Calof both have five points in the series, and juniors Kevin Ross, Alec Rush and Andrew Ammon have three apiece. Senior Mike Condon was in goal for both wins this season and is 2-0-1 against the Big Red with a 1.95 goals against average and a .936 save percentage.

MEETING IN THE PLAYOFFS
This is the first first-round series between Princeton and Cornell, since the current format of the ECAC Tournament in 2002-03. • Cornell is 5-2-1 against Princeton in the ECAC playoffs. The last time the teams met was in the 2009 semifinals, a game Cornell won in double overtime, 4-3. • Princeton is 1-0-1 against Cornell at Hobey Baker Rink; 0-4 at Lynah and 1-1 on neutral ice during the playoffs. • Princeton’s last win over Cornell in the ECACs was in the 1999 Quarterfinals at Hobey Baker Rink, when teams needed three points to advance. The teams tied 4-4 before a 6-5 Princeton win. • Incidentally that was the last year Cornell was on the road for the ECAC Tournament. They’ve been at home for either the first or quarterfinal round since 2000.

SCOUTING THE BIG RED
No. 9 seed Cornell finished the ECAC season with an 8-11-3 record. Overall the Big Red at 12-14-3. After losing to Princeton on Feb. 9, Cornell went on a 3-1-1 run to end the regular season.

Senior Greg Miller leads the team offensively with 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points. He has scored four of the team’s game-winning goals Sophomore Joel Lowry (LOS) has 20 points on 11 goals and nine assists. Sophomores Brian Ferlin (BOS) has six goals and 13 assists and Joakim Ryan (SJS) has a team-high 16 assists to go along with two goals for 18 points. Sophomore John McCarron (EDM), senior John Esposito, senior Nick D’Agostino (PIT) and junior Dustin Mowrey are all in double digits in scoring as well. Esposito has scored five power-play goals and three game winners. Junior Andy Iles has started in goal in all 29 games. He has a .914 save percentage and a 2.37 GAA.
