PRINCETON, N.J. (2/21/13) - The 2013 Princeton women's lacrosse season kicks off this Saturday, Feb. 23 when the Tigers host Villanova. Game time is 1 p.m., on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Eye on the Tigers
Senior co-captain Jaci Gassaway and sophomore Erin McMunn will provide a huge 1-2 punch for the Tigers on offense. The pair combined for 37% of the team’s scoring last year. Gassaway had 54 points on 38 goals and 16 assists, while McMunn had 48 points on 30 assists and 18 goals. During fall ball, McMunn showed new confidence in shooting and will be a scoring threat as well.
The top Tiger midfield unit is talented and tested. Senior Charlotte Davis will be a leader in organizing the unit. She was fourth on the team in scoring last year with 20 goals and five helpers, and was solid on defense and through transition for the Tigers. Controlling the center circle is the duo of junior Sarah Lloyd and sophomore Erin Slifer. The tandem combined for 44% of the team’s draw controls.
The defense should be the backbone of the Tigers this year. Headlining the unit is senior co-captain Caroline Rehfuss, who has been a starter since her freshman year. She was third on the team in caused turnovers last year with 11, fifth in ground balls with 15 and had five draw controls.
Back in goal is sophomore Annie Woehling. Woehling started in all 15 games last year and made 101 saves for a .412 save percentage and a 9.50 GAA.
Princeton and Villanova met for the first time last year. The Tigers won their season opener 16-3. The game’s leading scorer was Jaci Gassaway with five goals and two assists. Erin McMunn had two goals and three assists. Mary-Kate Sivilli, Chalotts Davis, Erin Slifer, Grace Bowen and Sam Ellis each had two or more points. Annie Woehling picked up her first career win in goal making three saves.
Scouting the Wildcats
Villanova returns 26 letterwinners and eight starters from last year’s roster. With 40 players on the roster, Princeton alum and Villanova head coach Julie Young ‘01 has options. The Wildcats did lose their top gun from last year. Sophomore Jackie Froccaro,. sister of Princeton’s Jake and Jeff, has stepped into that role early. The sophomore led the team it’s 10-9 loss to Lehigh last weekend, scoring five goals. Freshman Shannon Galvin and senior Annie Fallon both had two points. Villanova has veteran leadership on the defensive end with senior co-captains Shawna Giust and Sarah Moody. Goalkeeping is still a question mark as three different goalies saw time against Lehigh. Junior Julia Todd got the start and made three saves on 10 shots to pick up the loss. Senior Amanda Hirschfeld started the second half and made one stop on four shots. Senior Dani Wiedmeier played the final five minutes and stopped the only shot she faced.
