Moylan Leads Five Tiger Placewinners With 141-Pound Victory At Wilkes Open
Freshman Kevin Moylan had Princeton's first win over a Top 20 opponent this season, and now he has the team's first tournament title. Moylan led a group of five Tiger placewinners at the Wilkes Open by winning the 141-pound title.
Moylan was one of two finalists for Princeton, which will send five wrestlers into this weekend's 50th Midlands Championships. Grayson Shepperd made a strong run at 165 pounds before ultimately placing second. Teammates Seth Hazleton (4th) and Steven Leshinger (6th) both placed at 157, while Judd Ziegler took fifth at 165.
Moylan scored major decisions in both his first and final matches, but he won a pair of close contests in the middle two rounds. He topped Maryland's Shyheim Brown 4-3 in the quarterfinal, and then topped Lehigh's James Carucci 5-2 in the semifinal. His 11-3 victory over Lehigh's William Switzer earned him his first collegiate tournament title.
Shepperd was impressive in his run to the finals, which included a major decision and a third-period pin of Pittsburgh-Johnstown's Keith Ryan. Despite losing in the final, the effort should give Shepperd great confidence going into the second half of the season.
Shepperd fell to Penn's Bradley Wukie in the final; in the semifinal, Wukie defeated Ziegler after the Princeton freshmen won his first three matches in the main draw. Leshinger also won three matches in the main draw at 157, while Hazleton won two.
