Newell Gets First Career Shutout as Women's Hockey Tops Union 3-0
PRINCETON (11/30/12) - Freshman netminder Kimberly Newell recorded her first shutout of the season and gave the Princeton women's hockey team a 3-0 win over Union on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
With only six shots verses Union's eight in the first period, the Tigers did not let up as they went on to score the only points of the game.
Union started putting the shots in on Newell early, keeping the Princeton defense on its toes.
The Tigers' defensive skills were put to the test in the first when Union got its first power play of the game. Union's offense was fast to set up for shots, but Princeton did an even better job of blocking them for Newell, who did not even need to touch the puck.
Princeton started the second period aggressive at the Union goal. With a little scramble in front of Union's goalie Shenae Lundberg, senior Kelly Cooke managed to take a shot off a rebound from Rose Alleva. Then tried once more on her own deflected shot and put one in for the Tigers, giving them the lead 1-0.
The Tigers offense and defense worked together and kept the puck on Union's side and held Union without a shot until the final seven minutes and allowed just two total. The teamwork paid off when junior Olivia Mucha deflected in a point assisted by and Gabie Figueroa, building the Tigers' lead to 2-0.
The harmonious teamwork didn't stop in the third. With four minutes into the final period, Figueroa and Sally Butler set up Mucha in place for a third Tiger goal, expanding their lead 3-0 over the Dutchwomen.
Union ended the game with an empty net and an extra attacker.
Princeton outshot Union 31-19 and improves to a 5-6-2 overall and a 2-5-2 in ECAC.
The Tigers will play RPI Saturday, Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. at Hobey Baker Rink.
