Worthen & Tausher Bow Out in Pole Vault Semifinals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (5/25/12) - Sophomore Conor McCullough won the men's hammer throw at the 2012 NCAA East Regional and advances to then national final. He wasn't the only second year advancing to the finals as Damon McLean qualified in the triple jump, while senior Donn Cabral advances to the steeplechase semifinals.

McCullough made it look easy as all six throws were further than any of the other throws in the competition of 48.

He threw to 72.40 (237-6) on his second attempt to seal the win. His other attempts reached 72.17, 71.76, 71.44, 70.52 and 69.96.

Two of McCullough's strongest competitors, those with the second and third best throws in the nation this season, also competed today. Alexander Ziegler of Virginia Tech was the runner-up with a throw of 70.13. He passed on his final three throws, while his first two were under 69.25. Jeremy Postin of Florida was third with a best throw of 66.50. McCullough will face them again in the final on June 8.

McLean finished in fifth place in the triple jump with a mark of 15.75 (51-8.24). He would have qualified on his first attempt which was 15.72. It was his fifth attempt that he reached the furthest at 15.72. McLean will compete in the finals on June 8.

Senior Donn Cabral won heat 1 of the steeplechase at 8:38.41 to advance to the semifinals in Des Moines. Cabral is a two-time national runner-up in the steeplechase and looks to make his reappearance in the final on June 9. Freshman Eddie Owens finished 18th at 8:53.55 and senior Tyler King ran 9:11.11.

Sophomore Michael Williams missed the top 12 by just four as he finished 16th in the quarterfinals of the 800 at 1:49.61. He made the quarterfinals after posting a time of 1:49.56 in the first round of the 800 yesterday.

Juniors Tory Worthen and Lauren Tauscher both competed in the women's pole vault. Worthen finished 18th, clearing 3.95 (12-11.5) but couldn't clear the 4.05 marker. Tauscher reached 3.65 (11-11.75) to finish 35th.

The final day of the East Regional is tomorrow. Senior Trevor Van Ackeren will run in the quarterfinal of the men's 1500 at 6:30 p;m., with junior Greta Feldman running the women's 1500 at 6:45 p.m. Senior Dave Slovenski competes in the pole vault at 11 a.m. In the final event of the day senior Joe Stilin, sophomore Chris Bendtsen, sophomore Tyler Udland and junior Michael Franklin will run the men's 5k semifinal at 8:05 p.m.
